The King is Dead
Enzo
Where the hell were they? Aurora had left the school with Rex over half an hour ago. He shouldâve texted by now to let me know they had made it to Teterboro. We had agreed to keep communication to a minimum, so Angelo wouldnât suspect Rex was helping us. But how long did it take to type a quick message to say, âsheâs safe.â
In the blink of an eye, our plans had gone to shit. But I had to admit, plan B was solid, even if it meant being away from Aurora for now. As much as I hated the idea of Rex playing her hero, he was right. Thanks to Dad, I was no more than a soldier. And now that Angelo knew the truth about Aurora and me, he would use any excuse to kill me.
With Rex, she had a shot at making it to Canada.
If I traveled alone with Donata, I could make it there too. New York was no longer safe for me.
Rex hadnât spelled it out for me, but I wasnât an idiot. Don Valentino had shown my family mercy by letting us live. Beyond that gesture, he wasnât required to do much else.
The new king would sleep better at night if I wasnât alive. If Dad or I ever did anything to jeopardize his seat at the head of the table, Don Valentino would have no qualms calling for our heads.
My gaze darted to the clock on the mantle and then the screen on my laptop, while I paced the length of the living room. Fuck. Five days without seeing Aurora were going to be hell. I had hoped to be married to her by now. But as long as she was out of the country tonight, she wouldnât have to see Angelo ever againâlet alone marry him tomorrow.
By this time next week, we would be man and wife. Sure, we would be on the run, hiding, but I didnât care. I only wanted to be with her. Oddly enough, after all this time, I couldnât even say I would miss this place. Ever since Mom left, my life here had been filled with pain.
I sat on the sofa and checked the security feed on my screen. The men who followed me home were still keeping guard downstairs. I had no doubt they were here on Angeloâs orders. Dad was no longer king. He didnât have a crew at his disposal anymore, which meant he couldnât have me followed.
Dad still hadnât taken the time to explain to me how he had managed to convince the other Dons to let him walk away. Or why he had decided to leave the Societyâwhy he had strung me along, making me believe Iâd be king one day.
Mom hated this mafia world, and what it did to Dad. Was it possible that he was doing this for her? That had been my initial thought. But if that was his only motivation for abdicating, it would mean Dad was a halfway-decent husband.
